Your quick-start guide to achieving personal transformation
There are many times in our lives where we feel like it’s time to renovate our lives and ourselves; when we’re ready to throw off the way we and others perceive us and become someone new. If you are feeling the same way, you’re in the right place. So, how can you achieve personal transformation?
First, identify why you want to make a personal transformation
Have you left your job or started a new career? Gone through a breakup? Feel stuck or like others don’t perceive you in the way you wish? Any reason is valid – as long as it’s for yourself. True personal transformation isn’t easy, to make sure it’s something you really want.
As Robin Sharma, leadership expert and author of the book The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, said, “Transformation will be hard. Yes, you will feel frightened, messed up, and knocked down. Yes, you’ll want to stop. Yes, it’s the best work you’ll ever do.”
Plan Your Inner Transformation
Your inner transformation should be just as important (if not more so) as any outer transformation you want to make. Grab a piece of paper and list out the things you want to change about how you want to feel after your transformation. Do you want to feel more confident? Charismatic? Funny? Note down three to five different feelings you want after your transformation. As Oprah said in her book The Path Made Clear,“All dreams start from the core. Unless you are in total alignment with whatever you envision, the dream will get derailed. Your intention has to be pure.”
Plan Your Outer Transformation
When many people think about going through a personal transformation, they focus on the outer transformation they plan to make. Of course, the outer transformation will inform the inner transformation, so don’t feel bad for wanting to appear different.
Outline what kind of outer transformation you want to make. Do you want to:
- Lose, gain, or maintain your weight/body composition?
- Dye/cut your hair?
- Change or experiment with makeup?
- Change what you wear?

Plan Your Lifestyle Transformation
Do you plan to make lifestyle changes? While many people’s personal transformations only involve how they feel and look, if you’ve gone through a life-changing event, you may want to change your lifestyle, too. Consider if you want to change:

Now you know exactly what you want to change, it’s time to make your plan and start taking action. First, set a realistic timeline. Sometimes a personal transformation can be done in a week, sometimes it will take months. Next, plan the logistics of completing your personal transformation. If you want to get a new job or move to a new place, start planning and set yourself deadlines for making those changes so you can’t back out. If you need to replace your entire wardrobe, give yourself some time to sort through your clothes and buy new ones over a few weeks or months, depending on your budget.
Finally, Embrace the New You
When you feel your transformation is complete, fully embrace the new you. Before you leave the house each day look at your new self in the mirror and centre yourself in the way you really want to feel. Then, go out there and take on the world!
