About
The Art of Scent
aequill blur the boundaries of art and scent and has established an artist in residence programme in our East London Studio that explores the connection between the senses.
Bringing together artists working in sound, sculpture, fine art and fragrance, the team work closely to create fragrance that expresses the diversity, raw creativity, and unconventionality of the London art scene.
With a belief that crossing the boundaries between art and scent provides a stage for personal expression and innovation, aequill removes fragrance from the classical highbrow and places it unapologetically into the here and now of our favourite capital city.
2021-2022 Artist in residence
Ecka Mordecai is a London-based British artist whose interdisciplinary work spans sound, performance, and scent. Her practice blends cello, voice, eggflute, and improvisation with fragrance, exploring the emotional parallels between sound and scent.
As aequill’s artist-in-residence from 2021- 2022, Ecka has developed the Sound perfume range, inspired by East London’s soundscapes. Through “deep listening,” she transforms fleeting sonic moments—like birdsong, laughter, or rain—into complex unisex fragrances that evoke emotion and transcend traditional boundaries.
2023-2024 Artist in residence
Mengting Zhuo
Mengting Zhuo, born in Guangzhou, China, in 1990, is a London-based performance artist.
With an MA in Performance Making from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a background in literature, critical theory, and indie music, she explores language, meaning, and agency through live performance. Her work seeks to create quiet, poetic experiences in an already noisy world.
For Zhuo, perfume is a medium to explore time, memory, and presence, offering intimate, poetic moments within life’s natural flow.
